The painting depicts one of Venice's most iconic settings: Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo, dominated at centre by the equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni, modelled by Andrea del Verrocchio and cast by Alessandro Leopardi, which dominates the composition at centre. The basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo rises in the background, rendered with attention to its Gothic volumes and Renaissance dome. In the foreground, a religious procession animates the canal bank, with figures in liturgical dress, townsfolk, and moored gondolas. The warm late-afternoon light, with a sky crossed by pink clouds, gives the scene a character typical of nineteenth-century Venetian vedutismo. The animated figures recall the tradition of staffage characteristic of the Venetian vedutist painters of the period.
