Painted leather screen. Italy, 19th century.

183 x 164 cm (maximum opening).

Four-panel screen with scalloped crest; the wooden frame is covered in leather and bordered by metal studs along the uprights. The panels are entirely oil-painted with a still life composition set within an architectural niche: white and red grapes, peaches, melon, chestnuts, currants and a pumpkin arranged on a stone ledge alongside a wicker basket. The pictorial execution draws on the Italian still life tradition, with particular reference to seventeenth-century Neapolitan models, in the handling of light and the theatrical arrangement of the composition.

Condition report: Generally good state of conservation. Some localised losses and abrasions on the painted surface. Wear consistent with the age of the object.
