Vittorio Emanuele Bressanin is among the most appreciated Venetian painters working between the 19th and 20th centuries, trained at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts and active in national and international exhibitions. His output is marked by genre scenes of rococo flavour, aristocratic interiors and historical subjects treated with compositional refinement and strong technical command.
The painting depicts an elegant interior with two figures in 18th-century costume: a lady in a white gown and a seated gentleman who watches her, in an atmosphere of gallant conversation. The fluid brushwork and warm chromatic register (dominated by ochre, ivory and gold) echo the Venetian genre painting tradition, reinterpreted through the retrospective taste typical of late Italian eclecticism.
