Nattero Louis (1870-1915) " Toulon Harbour (var) " French Provence Marseille Paris
Artist: Louis Nattéro
NATTERO Louis (1870-1915)
" Toulon Harbour "
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,
Beautiful, bright and colorful work by Marseille painter Louis Nattero depicting a lively view of Toulon harbor taken most certainly from Quai du Parti. The foreground shows a general view of Toulon harbor, with fishermen in their boats moored at sea or on the quayside. The background offers a view of the harbor's interior.
The artist's colorful brushstrokes show us the power of the sun on a summer's day in Provence, where building facades are dappled with light.
The painter also takes particular care to reproduce the reflections and play of light on the water.
After an unhappy childhood in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At the age of 26, thanks to a grant from the town of Toulon, he became a pupil of Léon Bonnat in Paris.
However, suffering from lead poisoning, he was forced to cut short his Parisian studies. He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseille, his birthplace, in 1904. His talent was quickly recognized, and his paintings were a great success with clients in Marseille and Toulon.
From 1902 onward, he participated in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille, where his talent was rewarded with numerous prizes.
Note: A very small, inconsequential repainting is visible in the seascape.
Dimensions: 60 x 81 cm unframed and 73.5 x 94.5 cm with its original giltwood frame.
