Rare work by a French female artist active at the beginning of the 19th century Mademoiselle Rivière, which represents the portrait of a woman with a pearl tiara sitting on an armchair.
The artist paid particular attention to the many details such as the fabric, the hair, the tiara, the jewelry ...
We have, unfortunately, not been able to identify the model.

In the 19th century in France, institutions closed their doors to women. The Academy of Fine Arts was therefore forbidden to women painters until 1897 and with many restrictions. Women were confined to the role of wife, mother or artist's governess.
A few rare women artists would emerge such as Berthe Morisot and Rosa Bonheur.

Mademoiselle Rivière is known as a portrait painter. We know of her that she was born in Paris, that she was a student of Griait, of the old Academy. She held a studio for students and gave private lessons.
She exhibited at the salons of 1806, 1808, 1810, 1812 and 1819 a large number of portraits and some genre paintings such as: in 1806: A woman embroidering, study head; in 1810, A Savoyard dance; Portrait of a woman holding a book, Portrait of a woman drawing; in 1812: Portrait of a woman; in 1819, Henri IV left Gabrielle d'Estrées.

One of his works "Portrait of Joséphine Budaevskaia or Woman with a Lyre" is kept at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow (Russia).
