"Fishermen on the Beach"
Oil on panel,
Signed lower right.
A beautiful work by the Marseilles painter Louis Nattero depicting fishermen on the beach near Marseilles or Toulon. The artist pays particular attention to reproducing the nuances of color in the rocks on the beach and the gradations of color in the sea.
After an unhappy childhood, spent in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At the age of 26, thanks to a scholarship from the city of Toulon, he became a student of Léon Bonnat in Paris.
However, suffering from lead poisoning, he was forced to cut short his Parisian studies. He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseilles, his birthplace, in 1904.
His talent was quickly recognized, and his paintings were a great success with clients in Marseilles and Toulon.
He participated in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille from 1902 onwards, where his talent was recognized with numerous awards.
Dimensions: 17 x 32 cm unframed and 34 x 49.5 cm with its original carved and gilded wooden frame
(minor old restorations to the frame are present).
