Autograph letter signed by Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia - Moscow, 1817
Rare handwritten historical document dated Moscow December 13 (25) 1817, addressed to Mademoiselle de Wilderneth, governess of Her Imperial Highness Madame the Grand Duchess Alexandra Feodorovna, born Royal Princess of Prussia and future Empress of Russia.
In this official letter written in French, the language of the Russian imperial court in the 19th century, Alexandra Feodorovna testifies to her gratitude towards her governess and grants her a life annuity of four hundred ducats a year, payable quarterly from July 1 of the current year.
The document ends with the autograph signature of Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of the future Emperor Nicholas I, and a remarkable red wax seal bearing the Russian imperial arms with a double-headed eagle.
This piece is a particularly moving testimony to the ties uniting members of the imperial family with their close entourage, and illustrates the customs of reward and recognition within the Romanov court.
