Jean-Marie PIROT dit ARCABAS (1926-2018)
"Vase nostalgique"
Oil on canvas depicting a vase treated in the artist's characteristic geometric and poetic writing. This composition, entitled Vase nostalgique, testifies to Arcabas's colorist sensibility and his ability to bring abstraction and figuration into dialogue in a work of great delicacy.
Born in Lorraine in 1926 under the name Jean-Marie Pirot, Arcabas is one of the major figures of French painting in the second half of the 20th century. Trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he went on to teach in Grenoble and develop an internationally acclaimed body of work. His work, often associated with contemporary sacred art, is distinguished by the richness of his palette, the symbolic force of his compositions and his constant search for light and color. (Arcabas)
This small oil painting is of particular interest for its intimate character. In it, the artist simplifies forms down to the essentials, constructing the vase from an assemblage of colored facets that evoke both Cubism and his personal symbolic universe.
