Landscape Of The Roman Countryside, Signed And Dated Ettore Cumbo Borgia, Oil On Canvas, 19th Century
Artist: Ettore Cumbo Borgia (messina, 1833 – Firenze, 1899)
A captivating and luminous view of the Roman Campagna, dated and signed 1867 by the painter Ettore Cumbo Borgia (Messina, 1833 – Florence, 1899), one of the most esteemed interpreters of Italian landscapes in the second half of the 19th century.
The work depicts an evocative rural setting imbued with that idealized and poetic vision of the Lazio countryside that, since the 18th century, had captivated artists and travelers from across Europe during the Grand Tour. A dirt road winds between tuff outcrops and gentle hills, guiding the gaze toward the broad mountain horizon that completes the composition. In the foreground, a peasant woman on a mule walks the path with calm ease, while in the distance, a shepherd watches over his grazing flock. A thin column of smoke rising between the trees suggests the discreet presence of man, lending the scene a delicate sense of everyday life.
More than a topographical representation, the painting is a vision of the Romantic soul: nature appears harmonious and serene, bathed in a crystalline light that dissolves every harshness of reality to transform it into memory and poetry. The quality of the pictorial layering, the refined atmospheric rendering, and the diffused luminosity are distinctive elements of Ettore Cumbo's artistic maturity.
Born in Messina but Roman by adoption, Cumbo initially trained under the guidance of landscape painter Andrea Castelli. After moving to Florence, where he lived for most of his career, he established himself as an artist of landscapes, views, seascapes, and still lifes, receiving important recognition in numerous national and international exhibitions. In 1893, he was named an Academician of Merit of the Accademia di San Luca. His pictorial language, far removed from the more experimental currents of the time, won him a vast Italian and international clientele thanks to his lyrical sensibility and extraordinary ability to capture the light and atmosphere of the landscape.
