Rare set of 17 vintage silver prints depicting several masterpieces from the Egyptian collections of the Cairo Museum. Produced around 1925, these photographs bear the wet stamp of the renowned Lehnert & Landrock studio on the back. Well-known for their Orientalist landscapes and scenes, widely distributed throughout Europe, the two photographers here reveal a more confidential facet of their production. They apply to Egyptian antiquities the same exacting standards of composition, light and balance for which they are renowned. Precise framing and sober staging give these images a modernity that was remarkable for their time. Unlike their widely published views of the Orient, the photographs devoted to the Cairo Museum collections were produced in much more limited quantities, and remain particularly rare today. This set is thus a precious testimony to both the history of photography and that of Egyptology in the early 20th century.
