Authentic reliquary pendant mounted in a silver (tested) and beveled glass frame featuring on the recto a hand-painted miniature depicting Saint Nicholas of Myre, bishop and wonder worker, recognizable by his episcopal crosier and the three saved children, one of his most famous iconographic attributes.
Description
The reverse contains an assemblage of relics arranged around a central fragment of the True Cross (Ex Ligno Sanctae Crucis), in a devotional composition adorned with manuscript papers and polychrome decoration.
The relics identified are those of:
- Saint Roch, confessor (S. Rochi C.)
- Saint Alexis, confessor (S. Alexii C.)
- Saint Lucy, virgin and martyr (S. Lucii M.)
- Saint Peter Martyr (S. Petri M.)
- Fragment of the True Cross (Ex Ligno SS Crucis)
Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop, is one of the most venerated saints of Christianity. Protector of children, sailors, travelers and merchants, he is the origin of many European folk traditions.
Condition:
Very good condition with wear consistent with age.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
