Large Carved, Polychromed And Gilded Wooden Marian Altar-piece - 17th Century
Important altarpiece frame or devotional niche in carved, polychromed and partially gilded wood, dating from the first half of the 17th century.
The ensemble features a late-Renaissance architecture composed of a triangular pediment adorned with a winged cherub's head, resting on two twisted columns framing a wide central reserve intended to receive a painting, devotional image or reliquary now disappeared.
High at 122 cm by 96 cm wide, this ensemble is particularly decorative.
The upper crosspiece bears the painted inscription in capital letters:
"AVE REGINA COELI"
while the lower crosspiece is adorned with the formula:
"ORA PRO NOBIS"
("Hail, Queen of Heaven, pray for us").
The decoration retains beautiful antique polychromy in shades of red, blue, green and gold. The spandrels feature a stylized hand-painted plant decoration.
It's an interesting feature.
Interesting peculiarity, two armorial shields are painted on the lower side brackets:
- one charged with a cross gules on a pale field,
- the other charged with three torteaux accompanied by a bend.
These coats of arms, unidentified to date, probably testify to a commission of a noble or ecclesiastical nature.
In lower part inscription Guido Reni- Le Guide 1573- 1642
It was most certainly a frame for a copy by Reni or his school.
Beautiful decorative presence and authentic original patina.
