12 Knives With Solid Silver Blades And Ebony Handles – Empire And Restoration Periods, Early 19th Century

A beautiful, matching set of twelve table knives dating from the first third of the 19th century, from the Empire-Restoration period.

They feature ebony handles with a straight, understated shape, adorned on each side with an elegant silver escutcheon, and finished with molded end caps, also in silver.

The blades and ferrule rings are made of solid silver, which is one of the main attractions of this set, as antique knives are much more commonly fitted with steel blades.

The blades bear several antique French hallmarks, notably the Rooster hallmark (2nd title) as well as a hallmark known as the “Michelangelo”, attesting to their manufacture and inspection during the early decades of the 19th century.

The combination of dark ebony and silver, as well as the very clean lines of the handles, are characteristic of the neoclassical taste of the Empire and Restoration periods.

A complete twelve-piece set, particularly decorative and notable for its solid silver blades bearing hallmarks.

In good overall condition, with a few scratches, marks, and signs of wear consistent with its age, particularly on the blades.

A few cracks in the ebony.
