Pair Of Gilded Bronze Cassolettes In The Style Of Clodion, 19th Century

An important pair of gilded bronze cassolettes or lidded vases, in the Neoclassical style, executed in the manner of models by Clodion.

Each vase, baluster-shaped, rests on a fluted pedestal and a circular base adorned with a foliage frieze, which in turn rests on a quadrangular white marble plinth accented by a gilt-bronze molding.

The bodies are richly decorated with reliefs depicting cupids playing among grape clusters and Bacchic attributes. An elegant garland of leaves encircles the upper section, while the side handles take the form of ram’s heads extending into broad, flowing handles. The lids, featuring a radiating design and a fluted rim, are topped with pinecone-shaped handles.

The set features abundant and highly sculptural decoration, characteristic of the rediscovery of 18th-century decorative motifs during the Second Empire and in the second half of the 19th century.

An unsigned pair bearing no visible foundry mark. Very beautiful decorative presence, suitable for a mantelpiece, a console table, or a prominent place in a living room.

Original gilding is worn in places.
