A "cassolette" refers to a refined container, often made of gilded bronze, marble, porcelain or other precious materials, intended for burning perfumes or decorating the refined interiors of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Historically, these objects were used either as incense burners (to diffuse scents) or as potpourris containing macerations of flowers, spices or scented salts. These objects were frequently placed on fireplaces or integrated into furniture as decorative elements, testifying to the olfactory refinement and the art of living of the wealthy classes of this period.
Some cassolettes were also used as fireplace decorations.
