Portraits in miniature were the surest way to get to know a face from a distance or to remember a loved one. This intimate object, which has been around since the 16th century, has never ceased to evolve, moving from one medium to another in a variety of techniques. It was in the 18th century, and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, that miniatures on ivory made their appearance. Why ivory? simply because of the diaphanous transparency of the material, which facilitates skin tone.
