The work refers to the story in the Book of Exodus (2:16-17). After growing up in Pharaoh's court in Egypt, Moses kills an Egyptian who is mistreating a Hebrew and has to flee to the land of Midian. Arriving near a well, he encounters Jethro's daughters and intervenes to protect them from shepherds who were pushing them away, before helping them water their flock.
The scene illustrates this episode of protection and justice, a prelude to Moses' welcome in Jethro's house.
