Polychrome Terracotta Horse - China - Tang Period
Terracotta sculpture representing a prestigious horse.
This work, intended to accompany a high dignitary into the afterlife, perfectly illustrates the artistic refinement achieved during the Tang dynasty, considered one of the great golden ages of Chinese civilization.
The horse still shows remarkable traces of ancient polychromy, notably in the saddle and harness, in shades of red, green and ochre.
Tang horses, inspired by the famous mounts that came from Central Asia via the Silk Roads, were symbols of wealth, prestige and imperial power.
This sculpture is accompanied by a thermoluminescence certificate from the Ralf Kotalla laboratory (report no. 03K250504), concluding that it was fired at an early date, consistent with the Tang period, with an estimated dating of around 1200 years (+/- 20 %).
