Indo-persian Steel And Silver 'koftgari' 'dhal' Shield - India - 19th Century

Small Indo-Persian shield (Dhal), 19th century. Circular steel shield with finely engraved and patinated decoration, richly adorned with floral motifs and scrolls executed in koftgari technique with silver inlays, embellished with gilded copper/brass details. The shield is fitted with four hemispherical bosses mounted on flower-shaped appliques.

The central decoration features delicate oriental arabesques and engraved ornamentation characteristic of the Indo-Persian warrior arts of the late Mughal period.

This type of dhal was used both as a defensive weapon and as a prestige object, testifying to the remarkable craftsmanship of Indian and Persian metal workshops in the 19th century. Beautiful dark patina with traces of wear consistent with age and use.
