Corozo Nut Snuffbox, Napoleonic Period - France - Early 19th Century
Tabatière in corozo nut, richly carved in high relief, dating from the early 19th century, Napoleonic period. The object, of slightly curved elongated form, is entirely covered with a narrative decoration of great finesse of execution.
The main sides feature lively genre scenes: figures in traditional costume or popular inspiration, evolving in a rural setting with architecture, vegetation and domestic accessories. These lively compositions testify to an expressive folk art, close to scenes of everyday life.
The ends and borders are adorned with finely chiseled floral and geometric friezes, framing the main scenes and reinforcing the decorative balance of the whole. The hollowed-out interior retains a beautiful patina of use.
The lid is hinged by an antique hinge that has been restored, functionally and discreetly, respecting the integrity of the object.
Very fine example of corozo work, illustrating the skills of turn-of-the-19th-century craftsmen, between folk art and narrative taste
