A Pair Of Carved And Gilded Wood Shelves In The Nap III Style, Late 19th Century

Pair of Giltwood Wall Shelves, Napoleon III Style, Late 19th Century

An elegant pair of matching wall shelves, finely carved in wood and richly gilded with gold leaf, executed in the refined Napoleon III taste. A fine French work dating from the late 19th century.

Each shelf features a graceful serpentine silhouette with shaped and curved lines characteristic of decorative furnishings inspired by the Louis XV and Louis XVI revival styles. The façade is composed of three graduated shelves with shaped fronts, supported by finely carved twisted columns, lending both rhythm and elegance to the overall composition.

The back panel incorporates a mirror, enhancing the display while adding depth and luminosity to the piece. The upper section is crowned by an elaborate carved decoration centered on a stylized shell motif, surrounded by flowering branches and scrolling foliage, all executed with remarkable craftsmanship and highlighted by the rich gilding.

The harmonious proportions, quality of carving, and beautifully preserved gold-leaf finish give these shelves a particularly refined decorative presence. Originally intended for the display of porcelain, glassware, and precious objects, they remain highly decorative and functional pieces today.
