Bronze With A Brown Patina, A. Carrier, Cast By V. Colin & Cie, Paris, Late 19th Century
Elegant brown patinated bronze depicting The Neapolitan Lute Player, a model created by the renowned French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887), one of the leading figures of 19th-century French academic sculpture.
The young musician is portrayed in a graceful dancing pose while playing his lute. Crowned with vine leaves and draped with a flowing cloth tied at the waist, he embodies the joyful spirit and refined elegance of the Neo-Pompeian subjects that brought Carrier-Belleuse international acclaim during the Second Empire and the early years of the Third Republic.
The sculpture displays exceptional casting quality, with finely chased details highlighting the anatomical modeling, expressive features, flowing hair, and delicately rendered drapery. Its rich original brown patina enhances the sculptural depth and movement of the composition.
The bronze is signed "A. Carrier" on the terrace and bears the foundry mark of E. Colin & Cie, Paris, one of the most respected Parisian bronze foundries of the late 19th century. It is mounted on an elegant circular Verte de Mer marblebase, perfectly complementing the warmth of the bronze.
Combining artistic refinement, excellent craftsmanship, and the prestige of both the sculptor and the Parisian foundry, this sculpture is a fine example of late 19th-century French decorative bronze.
