A. Greilsamer (signature To Be Identified) French School, Late 19th Century

Artist: A. Greilsamer

A. Greilsamer (signature to be identified)
French School, late 19th century, Napoleon III era

A charming oil on mahogany panel depicting a troubadour-inspired genre scene. In a grove, a young knight dressed in Renaissance attire, sword at his side, exchanges a tender glance with an elegant young woman dressed in rich fabrics. The composition, of great delicacy, illustrates the taste of the second half of the 19th century for idealized medieval scenes, which were highly prized during the Second Empire.

The work stands out for the quality of its drawing, the refinement of the figures’ expressions, and the care taken in rendering the drapery. The soft color palette and the wooded landscape create an intimate and romantic atmosphere, characteristic of French academic painting of this period.

The painting is signed “A. Greilsamer” in the lower right corner. This signature remains formally unidentified to this day, although it appears authentic and contemporary to the work’s creation.

Painted on a solid mahogany panel—a noble medium frequently used by academic artists of the late 19th century— it is presented in its original carved wood and gilded stucco frame, richly molded, perfectly in keeping with the period.

In very good condition.
