Chalice, Patene Coffre, France Circa 1850
Silver chalice of neoclassical form, executed in repoussé and chased, composed of three elements assembled by screwing. It rests on a circular foot with a doucine decorated with three rosettes.
The domed terrace of the chalice features ornamentation composed of three circular medallions showing biblical symbols, including a radiating cross, alternating with floral motifs. The shaft features an inverted pear-shaped knot embellished with palm leaves and a rosette of gadroons, framed by rosary rings and bezels. It bears a gilded cup inside, flaring at the top.
Silver 950/1000, Minerve hallmark on the foot and cup of the chalice.
Master goldsmith hallmark: Favier Frères, leading specialist in goldsmithing for the Church. Paris work circa 1850.
This chalice is accompanied by its silver and silver-gilt paten (wear to gilding), engraved with the numeral IHS surrounded by a crown of thorns, Silver 950/1000, Minerve hallmark. Master goldsmith: Alexis Renaud, Paris, 1838-1847.
