Van Poelenburgh, Landscape Of The Roman Countryside With Figures And Ruins, 17th Century
Artist: Cornelis Van Poelenburgh (utrecht 1594 - 1667)
This important panel attributed to Cornelis Van Poelenburgh (Utrecht 1594–1667), one of the leading interpreters of the 17th-century Dutch Italianate landscape, depicts an evocative landscape of the Roman countryside enlivened by classical figures and ruins.
Paintings such as this, which offer an idealized vision of Mediterranean nature and a refined intellectual reference to the ancient world, enjoyed enormous success from the early decades of the 17th century. Well before the era of the Grand Tour, these works embodied in the Nordic imagination the allure of Italian classicism, Roman light, and the vestiges of antiquity. It was precisely the Nordic painters, who came to Italy during their formative years, who gave rise to this new pictorial genre.
The work can easily be attributed to Cornelis Van Poelenburgh, universally recognized as one of the founders of the Italianate Dutch landscape. Trained under Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht, he stayed in Rome between 1617 and 1625, years crucial to his artistic development. He was nicknamed "Satyr." A contemporary recalled how Van Poelenburgh "sought to paint his figures in the manner of Raphael and his landscapes like Claude Lorrain."
The composition features all the hallmarks of his mature work: the golden luminosity of the landscape, the delicate atmospheric rendering, the small figures elegantly distributed throughout the scene, and the ruins immersed in an idealized natural setting. Van Poelenburgh was, in fact, among the first artists to capture Italian light and atmosphere with extraordinary sensitivity, profoundly influencing European landscape painting for over a century.
His works are now held in major international museums, including the Uffizi in Florence, the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris, and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
