William de Leftwich Dodge (1867-1935) was an American painter, illustrator and muralist renowned for his portraits, decorative compositions and large-scale murals.
Born in Paris of American parents, he studied from an early age at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he was taught by renowned academic masters. His work is strongly influenced by the French tradition and symbolism of the late 19th century.
William de Leftwich Dodge exhibited regularly in the United States and Europe, receiving several awards during his career. He is particularly well known for his important mural decorations for American public buildings, notably the Library of Congress in Washington, and for various institutional commissions.
His work is characterized by a great elegance of drawing, a refined palette and a particular attention to the psychology of the models. His portraits of children and young women testify to a delicate sensitivity and mastered academic technique.
