Important portrait of an Alsatian industrialist from the Ruf (Ruef) von Hauzendorf family (originally from Bavaria, Germany). The subject wears the Legion of Honour decoration (July Monarchy model). Medals won in various competitions are also indicated: 1806, Silver 1819, Gold 1823, 1827, 1834, 1839, 1844. In the upper right corner, a coat of arms identifies the sitter as a member of the Ruf (or Ruef) von Hauzendorf family; "Azure, a fess Or charged with a rose Gules." This coat of arms is listed in J.B. Rieststap's Armorial Général. Canvas mounted on a panel on the back (stretch frame preserved), with some damage and losses. Contemporary giltwood frame (damaged). On the back of the canvas, a printed paper label reads "from Strasbourg to Selestadt" (Sélestat) in the Bas-Rhin department of the Alsace region.
