Oribe Stoneware Tea Ceremony Bowl (chawan) - Japan, 20th Century
Bol chawan , sybol of the wabi-sabi aesthetic, this Ao-Oribe (Green Oribe) style bowl captures the raw force of the elements and the beauty of the imperfect. Its green glaze, obtained by oxidizing copper, plays with light, alternating between glassy translucence and deep accumulations, evoking the texture of Kyoto forest moss after rain.
Made of Kabuto-bachi, its asymmetrical, vigorous silhouette is inspired by the arch of a samurai helmet. Mino's earth, deliberately dense and grainy, is fully expressed on the foot left bare, revealing superb chips of feldspar (ishihaze) spurted out under the action of fire.
Inside, the potter's movement culminates in a continuous spiral (uzumaki), a visual center of gravity inviting contemplation. A piece of great tactile power, where technical mastery fades away to let the material vibrate.
