Presence of wear, minor chips and old concretions

Important Roman architectural fragment in molded terracotta featuring an elegant decoration of stylized scrolls and acanthus leaves in slight relief. The surface retains interesting early traces of white stucco and vestiges of polychromy. Acanthus decoration, directly inherited from Greek and then Roman ornamental vocabulary, is one of the great classical motifs of ancient imperial architecture.

Comparable decorations can be found on numerous fragments preserved in the archaeological collections of the Louvre Museum, the Capitoline Museums or in the decorative remains of Pompeii and Ostia.

The quality of the relief, the beautiful archaeological patina as well as the vestiges of polychromy give this fragment a particularly strong decorative presence.

The fragment can be seen at Issy-Les-Moulineaux.
