Georges Lévêque, known as Gerlès, was a French painter from Béthune, born in 1919 and deceased in 2021. He began his artistic career in 1942 under the guidance of his drawing teacher, Mr. Beaumont, and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where he became friends with André Lhote, Ossip Zadkine, and Édouard Pignon, who encouraged him to exhibit in Béthune, Le Touquet, and at Drouot.

After permanently returning in 1968 to La Couture in the Pas-de-Calais region, he continued to create tirelessly, leaving behind a rich and diverse body of work. Deeply attached to his region, he exhibited regularly in renowned galleries such as Galerie Septentrion in Bondues and Galerie Mischkind in Lille. He shared gallery walls with well-known artists from Northern France, including Lhotellier, Hémery, Hennebelle, Dodeigne, and Van Hecke.

Affiliated with the Cubist movement, Gerlès nevertheless rejected excessive abstraction, always seeking to preserve a link with classical painting—both in subject matter and in the rigor of his compositions. His aim was to inscribe modernity not through rupture, but through continuity with tradition. Throughout his life, he explored a wide range of styles, from naïve figuration to abstract art, consistently achieving critical and artistic success.

This fine work is a reflection of his talent.
