Antique Paintings, Neoclassical Portrait Of A Woman In Profile, Oil On Canvas, 19th Century. (qr 741)

Artist: Léon Pierre Urbain Bourgeois (1842–1911)

The antique paintings category features an oil on canvas depicting a female portrait in profile from the 19th century,

created in the Neoclassical style. The work depicts a young woman with harmonious features, portrayed in profile,

with updo and ornamental crown that recalls the iconography of classical antiquity.

Her attire, consisting of a gown in shades of pink and ivory, evokes the female figures of the Greco-Roman era,

suggesting an idealized and symbolic representation, rather than a realistic portrait of an identifiable person.

The dark background highlights the face and lends depth and solemnity to the composition. French Antiquity.

The painting is characterized by soft brushwork, delicate chiaroscuro effects, and a refined rendering of the skin tone.

This antique work is signed in the lower left corner U. Bourgeois, a French painteractive in the artistic scene of 19th-century France.

Léon Pierre Urbain Bourgeois (1842–1911) was born in Nevers and died in Paris; he was a student of important masters, including

Alexandre Cabanel, a well-known academic painter of the time.

He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, one of France’s most important art schools. In 1865 he exhibited his works at the

Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, the most important official exhibition in France at the time.

Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1863.

The painting is set in a beautiful contemporary frame gilded with fine gold leaf, which enhances

its historical and decorative character. The frame and the oil painting have been restored with care and professionalism.
