Still Life Painting, Still Life With Plums And Fruit, Antique Painting, XIX. (qnm776)
The antique paintings, still life category presents a refined still life with plums and fruit, painted in oil on canvas, 19th century.
At the centre of the composition is an elegant white oval dish filled with plums, depicted in different shades of colour.
The green leaves still attached to the branches emphasise the fresh and realistic character of the composition, while the fruit is arranged
on a pristine white tablecloth, painted through delicate transitions of light and shadow.
On one side there is a glass goblet and an antique jug, whose surface delicately reflects the light.
This is a French still-life painting dating from the second half of the 19th century.
The antique still-life painting is signed Jean Claude at the lower right, a French painter known for still lifes of flowers, fruit, animals and game.
Eugène Claude (1841–1923) was born in Toulouse, but was artistically active in Paris. He participated in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1861 to 1923.
Coming from a family of porcelain merchants, Eugène Claude began his professional training as a porcelain painter.
In 1889, he received an honourable mention on the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition, a distinction that was repeated at the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
In 1895, he also received a second-class medal at the Salon des Artistes Français, confirming the recognition he had achieved within the French artistic scene.
His works are today found in public and private collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims and Arras, among others.
Eugène Claude therefore remains a significant figure in 19th-century French painting.
The painting is enhanced by a gilded frame, contemporary with the artwork, which adds to its decorative and collectible value.
The frame and the oil painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
