Antique Oval Woman Portrait, Painting, Young Woman, Oil On Canvas, XIX Century. (qr764)

Artist: Alexandre Serres (1846 – 1901)

The Antique Paintings category presents a refined 19th-century French female portrait, signed by Alexandre Serres,

an oval-format oil on canvas depicting an elegant young woman portrayed in half-length, enhanced by a delicate

white dress with a high collar and a large bow among her dark hair, gathered into a long braid.

Her intense gaze and composed pose convey all the grace and sophistication of 19th-century French academic painting,

a period in which bourgeois portraiture reached an extraordinary level of technical and artistic quality.

This is an antique painting dated 1888 and signed on the right Alexandre Serres, a 19th-century French painter

known for his production of portraits, genre scenes and mythological compositions.

Alexandre Serres (Toulouse, 1846 – 1901) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse,

where he was a pupil of the masters Jules Garipuy and Denis.

From 1876 onwards, he began exhibiting regularly at the principal French Salons,

including the prestigious Salon de Paris and the Salon des Artistes Français.

In 1895 he was appointed professor of drawing and modelling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and, two years later,

took up the chair of decorative arts. Among the most significant works preserved in French museums are "Orphée et Eurydice" (1883)

and "Au fil de l'eau" (1877), both housed at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse.

The painting is enhanced by a splendid gilded frame with a love-knot motif, richly decorated and gilded with fine gold leaf,

perfectly contemporary with the painting. French Antique Art.

The frame and the oil painting have been carefully and professionally restored.
