Frans Mortelmans (1865-1836) was born in Antwerp in Belgium, studied at the school“Des Beaux-Arts” in Antwerp
where he later became a teacher. He then moved on and became a teacher at the Berchem Academy and became its director.
Frans Mortelmans actively participated in the artistic societies that flourished in Flanders at the turn of the
the 19th and 20th centuries. He also participated in salons and various exhibitions in Antwerp, Mechelen, Ghent and Liège.
In 1903 he received official recognition in Belgium and one of his watercolours was acquired by the Royal Museum
of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1932 he was made a Commander of the Order of Leopold.
The canvas has been re-lined.
The antique gilded frame and the antique oil painting are carefully and professionally restored.
