Small Gouache On Vellum, Early 18th Century, St Mathieu. France.
Small bust portrait of St. Matthew, holding a halberd in his left hand. The saint's expression is severe, even sad. He is dressed in an ample light-gray antique-style cloak, which falls over his left arm in multiple folds. Medium-length brown/gray hair.
His name is inscribed in Roman characters at the bottom of the image. The saint is one of the four Evangelists, and is most often depicted with a child, particularly in the tetramorphs. But the halberd is part of his classic iconography.
The portrait is bordered by an original gold fillet. And an ink line.
Late 17th, early 18th century.
The dark wood and red velvet frame dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.
