Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914), La Casa Del Poeta Tragico, Pompei C. 1870 Vintage Albumen Print
Vintage albumen print.
Casa del Poeta Tragico, Pompei.
The composition emphasizes depth and perspective, drawing the viewer into the uncovered courtyard with its impluvium (rainwater basin) and famous mosaics.
The Casa del Poeta Tragico (House of the Tragic Poet) is a famous domus in Pompeii, located in Regio VI, Insula 8, at the western end of the city. It owes its name to a mosaic depicting a tragic theatrical scene.
Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914) was an Italian photographer of German origin.
A keen traveler, he took numerous photographs for albums, catalogs and postcards. He worked in Rome, then opened studios in Naples. He photographed Pompeii, but also the streets and architecture of Naples, as well as scenes of daily life (often reproduced in the studio). Together with German photographer Edmund Behles, they became the most prolific photographers of the period.
Sommer was appointed official photographer to King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy.
