Lithophane numbered 1899-52. Dimensions: 10 x 12 cm. Mid-19th century. Bucolic scene: the meeting of an elegant lady and a doe in the woods. A lithophane is a thin ceramic plaque with a relief, ranging in thickness from 1.5 to 4 mm. The porcelain is fired twice at a temperature of 1250°C. In normal lighting, there is practically no visible image, but a three-dimensional image is created when a light is placed behind it. Lithophanes became particularly popular in the mid-19th century.
