Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France and particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, toured the greater southwest throughout his life. A pupil of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is reminiscent of the Barbizon school, he remained faithful to the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest ambiences, places steeped in history, bewitching valleys, or even a landscape in its simplest form that he knew how to enhance with a vital contrast.
Since 1890, Louis-Alexandre Cabié has criss-crossed the banks of the Vézère in all weathers and seasons. He spent much of his time in the Dordogne commune of Les Eyzies, where he married for the second time in 1894. Several hundred works were created on the banks of this river, the majority of which are not located today.
Our small vertical panel is the perfect illustration of a cool autumn morning in Les Eyzies. Fog envelops the cliffs and tall vegetation, capping the Vézère in a wispy hat. The trees in the foreground give a glimpse of the stream escaping towards Le Bugue.
