Rouen Earthenware Beard Dish XVIIIᵉ - Blue Décor On Stanniferous Background

Rouen earthenware beard dish XVIIIᵉ - blue decoration on stanniferous background

Rare Rouen earthenware beard dish, dating from the XVIIIᵉ century.

This model, also known as a barber basin, is characterized by its specific shape with indentation, designed to hug the neck when shaving. It features a blue monochrome decoration on a tin-glaze background, typical of Rouen production during this period.

The decoration, in a blue monochrome on a tin-glaze background, is typical of Rouen production during this period.

The decoration, both sober and elegant, is part of the tradition of Rouen earthenware, whose development from the XVIIᵉ century onwards is marked by figures such as Edme Poterat. Influenced by Italian and Oriental models, these productions are distinguished by the quality of their glazes and the finesse of their motifs.

Originally used in toiletry and shaving practices, this type of object testifies to the evolution of domestic uses and the attention paid to hygiene in the XVIIIᵉ century.

This dish is part of a controlled production logic, while at the same time being able to be considered as a study piece of ancient utilitarian forms, and a genuine showcase object, today sought after for its decorative character.

Very good condition.

An authentic piece full of charm, representative of the expertise of Rouen's workshops.
