Contemplative Object (scholar Root Or Gongshi), Wood, China, Qing Period.

Chinese scholar root or object of contemplation (gongshi) in carved wood, Qing period, 18th-19th century. Carving made from a natural root with openwork and moving forms.

Similar objects of contemplation were prized in the cabinets of Chinese scholars (wenren) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These works were intended for aesthetic and philosophical meditation, celebrating:

  • the creative power of nature,
  • spontaneous imperfection,
  • forms evoking mountains, dragons, clouds or sacred landscapes.

These sculptures were often displayed on scholar's tables alongside dream stones (gongshi), incense burners, brushes and calligraphic scrolls.
