Obverse: Effigy of Leopold I, King of the Belgians, in left profile, wearing a wreath of oak leaves.
Reverse: Allegory of industrial and agricultural progress. A seated female figure, symbol of the Province or the Nation, is surrounded by personifications of Industry and Agriculture. Economic and heraldic attributes at her feet. Inscription: HAINAUT EXHIBITION. Date in Roman numerals: MDCCCLI.
Laurent Hart, born December 6, 1810, in Antwerp and died in Brussels on January 10, 1860, was a Belgian medalist. After studying at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he furthered his training under Joseph-Pierre Braemt, Adrien Veyrat, and Adolphe Jouvenel, renowned medalists of his time. Laurent Joseph Hart produced a prolific body of work. He was a member of the Brussels Freemasons and the True Friends of the Union. In the former collection of Baron de Surmont de Volsberghe, Minister of Industry, a significant portion of over a thousand pieces consisted of Hart's medals.
