The Quadriga Of Selene - Monumental Suite Of 4 Horse Heads From The "parthénon" By Phidias

Artist: Guglielmo Ulderigo
Description :

Exceptional monumental set of four life-size horse heads in solid white marble. This unique suite represents the mythical Quadriga of Selene (goddess of the Moon), based on the absolute masterpiece of classical Greek sculpture: the East pediment of the Parthenon, attributed to the genius of Phidias (c. 438-432 BC).

L'Atelier G. Ulderigo:

These pieces come from the prestigious Roman workshop of Guglielmo ULDERIGO. Active at the end of the 19th century, this workshop was the absolute reference for wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour, delivering executions of rare archaeological fidelity. Unlike conventional reproductions, Ulderigo's work is distinguished by direct carving in solid marble and rigorous anatomical study of the originals.

Features & Provenance:

Each sculpture is accompanied by its original brass identification plate, specifying:

  • Iconography: "Horse head from the Quadriga of Selene".

  • Historical origin: "East pediment - Parthenon".

  • Museum source: "Original marble of the Pentelic in the British Museum - London".

  • Signature: "Copy by G. ULDERIGO".

Work details:

The expressive power of these sculptures is striking. Ulderigo has captured the "exhausted" realism of Selene's horses at dawn: dilated nostrils, prominent veins on the muzzle and muscles contracted by divine effort. The rendering of the manes and the nobility of the white marble give this ensemble an uncommon architectural presence.

Why this ensemble is exceptional:
  • Rarity: While museums often possess only fragments (only one original head in the British Museum), this suite makes it possible to reconstitute the complete quadriga.

  • Material nobility: Direct carving in solid marble (consequent weight), guaranteeing durability and heritage value.

  • Condition: Beautiful antique patina, sound pieces, ready for installation.

Ideal for a prestigious estate, monumental reception hall or sculpture gallery.
