Viennese Porcelain "dejanira"
Artist: Porcelaine De Viennes
Vienna Porcelain Plate with a mythological scene of Deianira. Some wear to the gilding. No wear on the foot; it's just a shadow! No damage. No restoration. Austrian work from the late 19th century. Mythology of Deianira: When Heracles and his wife try to cross the Evenus River, which is in flood, the centaur Nessus claims to be the ferryman authorized by the gods for his honesty. He offers to carry Deianira on Heracles' back so she doesn't get wet while he swims across. Heracles agrees, paying the centaur, then throws his weapons to the other bank before diving into the water. Reaching the other side, he hears his wife's cries and, turning around, sees the centaur trying to rape her. Seizing his bow, he loosed an arrow at the centaur. Hera, still desiring the demigod's downfall, inspired Nessus with his wicked deed and his last words. The arrow pierced his chest, but he managed to whisper a final message to Deianeira.
