French painter and draughtsman.
Had a difficult youth in Marseille, where he was left to his own devices and led a bohemian life. Taken in by the Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco, who initiate him, noticing his talent for drawing and lithography. He began painting in the old port.
In 1921, at the age of 31, he moved to Paris, frequenting artists he met in bistros such as Pascin, Heuzé, Frank-Will and Gen Paul. At Mère Catherine's, where he was fed in exchange for canvases or a fresco, Leprin rubbed shoulders with Valadon, Utter and Utrillo.
He made his living selling drawings and pastels to tourists.
In 1924, he signed an exclusive contract with Henri Bureau, a framer in Montmartre, who offered to help him and further his career. It was there that his friendship with Frank Will was strengthened.
In 1926, he embarked on a journey through the French countryside and painted numerous landscapes or views of towns and villages.
Despite the success of the two exhibitions at the Galerie Druet that he held in Paris in 1928 and 1931, Marcel Leprin remained a solitary and depressive painter, sinking into drink and drugs and dying in 1933 at the Hôpital Tenon in Paris (20th).
