Kilim Reyhanlı. Anatolia. Circa 1870. 277 X 81 Cm
Superb Reyhanli gallery / hallway from southeastern Anatolia. This is actually a single piece of kilim, or fragment.
Fragment certainly, but one of great beauty.
Masterfully woven wool on wool. The weave is extremely fine. We've pushed the limits of feasibility with wool. Refinement and delicacy are the order of the day. Usually, this is precisely the type of piece one admires in museums or in specialized magazines, from private collectors.
Exclusively vegetal hues, deep and luminous. In perfect harmony. Tones of pomegranate red, wine lees, deep indigo, raspberry, saffron ochre, ivory.
Large, mirrored ram's horn motifs accompanied by refined borders with tangled patterns. Wonderful!
A few strands of hair can be distinguished in one place, which the weaver incorporated into the weft to leave us with a personal memory frozen in time rather than a signature.
