Very elegant George II period lidded tankard . It is in excellent condition. It is made of sterling silver (925%). The lid and base of the tankard bear the City of London hallmarks for the year 1750 and the master goldsmith hallmark of Richard Gurney and Thomas Cook. It weighs no less than 830 grams.
On the belly of the tankard are the coats of arms of Thomas Leeke of the Vineyard and Elizabeth Henshaw , a landowning couple of Shropshire's country gentry who married in the mid-eighteenth century.
Their second son Thomas nevertheless made a substantial fortune in the English India Company and built a huge mansion that still stands today: Longford Hall in Shropshire.
This beautiful residence now houses a private boarding school.
