Medieval Bronze Vervain - 14th Century - Heraldry And Equestrian Equipment

Medieval bronze vervain - 14th century period - Heraldry and equestrian equipment

Rare medieval bronze vervain, dated to the late 13th or 14th century.

Vervelles were small heraldic elements designed to adorn and identify the knight's equipment, particularly harnesses and equestrian accessories. Widespread from the 13th century onwards, they were veritable markers of belonging and identification.

Vervelles were also used to decorate and identify the knight's equipment, in particular harnesses and equestrian accessories.

The example presented takes the form of a shield decorated with two symmetrical plant motifs. It is topped by a small loop enabling it to be attached to the equipment. This type of decoration is typical of late 13th and 14th century production.
