Oil on canvas depicting a notary seated at his work table, holding pen and ruler in front of a register inscribed "Titres de Rente en Argent".
The work is signed and dated 1841. The reverse bears an early inscription: "Étienne de Fos, père, dans sa 89 ème année, peint par Cadeau, 8bre 1841".
This portrait perfectly illustrates the world of the legal and financial bourgeoisie under the reign of Louis-Philippe.
