Japanese Monoxyle Cane With Wisdom Monkey

Japanese monoxyle cane carved from a single piece of wood, executed in the XIXᵉ century. The handle depicts a monkey in an evocative attitude, one hand brought to the ear while the other is placed in front of the mouth. This iconography refers to the famous wisdom monkeys of Japanese tradition, symbols of restraint, reflection and self-control.
This cane perfectly illustrates the art of woodcarving in Japan during the Meiji period
