Elegant knitting table, also known as a work table, made at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries during the Directoire period, a transitional period marked by a return to rigorous lines and more restrained ornamentation after the last expressions of the Louis XVI style.

The furniture rests on a solid oak and mahogany frame, the oak parts veneered with mahogany, an emblematic species of the last quarter of the 18th century and the early 19th century, appreciated for the depth of its hue and the sobriety it lends to the forms. The whole presents a balanced architecture, where verticality is subtly softened by the design of the uprights and the elegant curve of the legs.

The octagonal top forms a deep bowl for sewing or knitting. It opens at the front with a discreet flap for convenient access to its contents.

The deliberately restrained decor is based on a play of subtle contrasts. Ebony beading highlights the structural lines, while fine copper beading punctuates the contours of trays and shelves, adding a discreet sparkle without upsetting the overall balance. The uprights are adorned with copper diamond motifs framed in ebony, typical of the neoclassical geometric vocabulary.

Two spacer shelves, also octagonal in shape, reinforce the furniture's stability while providing complementary surfaces. Their formal repetition contributes to the overall harmony of the composition.

Through its restrained proportions, the quality of its veneers and the precision of its decoration, this knitting table fully illustrates the Directoire aesthetic, where the quest for balance and clarity of line takes precedence over ornamental abundance.

The piece has been cleaned and refinished to its original appearance. One leg shows an old restoration (recollement). The set is complete and has no missing parts.
